yesterday i gave you all a heads up on a room available in a beautiful duplex in prospect heights – i hope someone out there is interested!

today, i’m trying to help out a friend on the other side of the country…

my friend bryan keever is moving out to san francisco later this month. he’s an incredibly talented graphic designer and budding photographer (check out his portfolio here). bryan would appreciate any contacts, career-related or otherwise.

he’s also in need of a place to live, so any info on people in need of a roommate would be great as well.

if anyone has any leads on apartments or design work, please contact myself or bryan directly at bryan.keever (at) gmail.com. i seem to remember that y’all are awfully friendly out there, so please make sure the eyes of your eyes are opened.

just in case, after perusing his stunning portfolio, you have any doubts about this man’s character, well, bryan is groinstrong. that should settle it.

Groinstrong Classifieds

Monday, April 12th, 2010

My friends -this is the first of a few requests this week. This is a beautiful duplex in a great neighborhood – if you’re interested, email Jordan at jordan.h.pender (at) gmail.com. Here’s the deal:

My roommate and I are looking for a considerate roommate to share our duplex apartment in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. The rent for your room will be $600 a month. We are a man and a woman in our early thirties who are a non-profit worker and in grad school. The building is in a great location, one block from the Brooklyn Museum and the Botanic Garden, a two-minute walk from the Eastern Parkway stop on the 2/3, about 20 minutes from lower Manhattan. We are also a short walk from Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Library, the farmers market in Grand Army Plaza, the food co-op, and all the restaurants and things to do in Park Slope and Prospect Heights.

The apartment is on the first floor, facing a residential street. On the first floor of the apartment there is a smallish kitchen with a dishwasher, a large shared dining area/ living room with an exposed brick wall and two large windows, a bathroom, and my bedroom. On the lower-level there are two bedrooms, one of which would be yours, and a shared bathroom. The bedroom available has two windows and a large closet. The apartment building has laundry, twenty-four-hour security, a doorman, and indoor courtyards.  There are NO PETS allowed in the building. Also, you should be O.K. with not smoking in the apartment.

the late edition: inkin’ and linkin’

again my shoulder is preventing me from comfortable sleep, so i’m staying up until i’m tired enough that it won’t matter. i figger, why not use the time to discuss some blog-related updates!

first and foremost, i have just this very afternoon published my first post as a contributor for Cobble Hill Blog. i’m excited for the chance to write regularly and delve deep into this wonderful, history-filled neighborhood.

Homer and Groinstrong say HO HO HO HO-OH!

my dear local friends – i know you have amazing stories to tell, and i’m sure more than a few of you hold strong opinions on the faults and follies of the cobble hill/carroll gardens nabe,  you all know what’s really goin on… share with me and together we will bring your stories to the masses, preserving them forever in teh internets. many thanks to my dear friend homer (right, at santacon 2009), publisher of the super-paper The Brooklyn Bugle, for the opportunity to serve.

also, i hope you at some point will take some time to peruse the link sections and explore my blogfriends and excellent webcomics. my most recent blogfriends addition is the highly artistically-minded Quick, said the bird… which looks into local fashions in the SF Bay Area and delves into collection analyses with a particular gift for intertwining poetry with fashion photography, critique and commentary. she knows her stuff. she’s goin places, people. let’s give her the ole’ groinstrong bump by sending massive amounts of traffic her way. wouldn’t that be nice of you all? thank you so very much!

enough for now. tomorrow i will unleash… the shoulder monster! RWAWRRRG! KARGGGgr.,,!< DOWN BOY! DOWN!

puppet dance party

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

i’ll be busy moving furniture tomorrow, so here’s a quick post before bed. i didn’t realize that the link to this video was changed not long after i posted it. so many of you may not have had the opportunity to see this remarkable, quirky little piece brought to you by my friends amber, sam, kirsten and chris (and featuring us newlyweds on the day of our wedding!). the puppets in this video are from a puppet show based on the children’s book city of hamburgers that my friends developed and continue to perform in the new york area. kirsten and amber help run an amazing organization called alphabet arts that you should totally hire to perform at your child’s next birthday party!

on with the show!

to my dear friends in the new york area: my old friend annie bacon is in town! we love anne and it is always nice to have her smiling face around. this thursday at 10 pm, she (and many of our friends) are performing an original folk opera at jalopy. it is an excellent place to see music, and is just a short walk from my house. i will be pressing through the growing fatigue of radiation treatment to attend, and thus you have no excuse for missing this one. if you would like to meet at sackett street and walk over with us, that would be just fine.

if you visit annie’s myspace, you can listen to the song “window moons,” which she generously wrote about visiting me and kathryn when we are old and gray. it is a very sweet and tender song. i was singing it in my head when we were married. “we’re looking forward to looking back.” lovely.

apartment story

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

hey friends! the garden apartment of our gorgeous brownstone has suddenly become available! we’re hoping to have some friends or friends of friends move in. here are the details.

Large 1 (or 2) BR Garden Apartment in Lovely Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill Brownstone –  $2100

This lovely garden apartment has a front bedroom, newly-renovated bathroom, huge kitchen/dining room area, and separate back room extension that can function as a big bedroom or can be converted into a living room, depending on your needs. Please note that this back extension is less well insulated than the rest of the house, so you may want to check it out for yourself before deciding to use it as a bedroom (although the previous tenants have used it that way, and have been fine with it).

Large backyard, with table and chairs, BBQ grill, and lots of possibilities for gardening! Access to a large basement storage area.

This is the entire first floor of a classic Brooklyn brownstone, located on Sackett and Court, just 3 blocks from the F-train and steps away from all the restaurants and stores of Court and Smith Streets.

We are looking for someone to move in starting March 15, but are somewhat flexible.

Upstairs neighbors are a super-friendly group of 4 (2 women, 2 men) who would love to keep the entire home feeling warm, neighborly, and pleasant (occasional shared BBQ parties in the summer, dinner parties in the winter, and everything in between).

Email 287sackett@gmail.com for more information or to arrange a time to see the place! Pictures will be available soon. This apartment is sure to be filled quickly so if you’re interested, be in touch!

i’m off to north carolina in the morning! i can’t wait. it’s odd to think about a christmas away from my family, but luckily kathryn’s family is awesome. and so are the mountains above asheville!

in preparation for the holiday, i finally, after years of living in wintry climes, finally, finally, finally got a good winter jacket. it’s made by spiewak, a brooklyn-based company that since world war one has made uniforms for soldiers, police officers, firepeople and more. click here for an amazing interactive graphic timeline of their history. merry christmas to me! i think i deserve it, don’t you?

i hope you all have a marvelous holiday! thank you as always for your support.

and here is the spiewak pearson duffle. just like paddington bear!

does anyone know any young adult cancer survivors in new york city (other than me)?

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

have i ever told you how much i love cancercare? they are a wonderful, wonderful organization. i’m sorry, i should say cancercare (they like their italics). cancercare “is a national nonprofit organization that provides free, professional support services for anyone affected by cancer.” there are lots of organizations that provide free support services to those affected by cancer, the american cancer society chief among them. but the ACS doesn’t provide free therapy around the corner from my office. there’s something so refreshing about talking to someone and not having to think about how much it costs. $35 doesn’t seem like much, but man does it add up quickly. i’m relieved that entering the trial will mean all co-pays for trial-related appointments will be paid by roche. thanks guys!

i’ve been seeing a counselor there for some time, and have come to greatly appreciate her guidance. in my darkest times, she’s been there for me, and has given me the tools to work through those fears and anxieties when they appear (which, thankfully, happens less and less often). kathryn also has found solace and support in the caregiver group that they host.  my partner bears a heavy burden, even as my health continues to improve. she cares for me with such grace and tenderness (as so many of you do) but also has been witness to the pain, the frustration, the urgent and unchanging nature of mortality. i don’t know how she does it. but i do know that the group has been helpful, and i hope those of you who are caregivers have opportunities to talk through the experience.

cancercare is also working on establishing a young adult survivor’s group, and that’s why i’m posting about all of this. we were hoping to get started this fall, but we’re still trying to achieve critical mass. i’m so looking forward to being able to talk with other 20-/30-somethings about being young and sick. the few conversations i’ve had with other young late-stage cancer patients have been enlightening.

so… if you know a young adult cancer survivor in the new york area who you think might be interested, please have them email me at jonah (dot) ei (at) gmail (dot) com. thanks for your help!

also, i would not be offended if you were to donate to cancercare. :)
